Halloween originally
known as “All Hallows' Eve” or” All Saints' Eve”, is an age-old tradition that was once celebrated by Celtic
peoples. Ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival
Samhain, decidedly have had their pagan roots. Later on Samhain may have been Christianized
and so resultantly it became known as All Hallows Day. This particular time was dedicated to remembering the
dead, including saints (hallows) martyrs, and all the faithful that had been departed.
Did you know that some Christians historically abstained from eating meat
on "All Hallows' Eve"? Instead, the traditional preference went with the vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul
cakes.
Halloween is
usually observed on 31 October; however, this year because of the COVID 19,
this annual event will most certainly be postponed. But you can still celebrate it, by creative
ways, safely at home.
Happy Halloween.
